I wonder how many users are ever looking to open or download a show's RSS feed from the embed player. I would suspect an extremely small number, and that this button is either being ignored, or users are expecting it to do something other than what it's currently doing.
I believe there were plans to replace that button with something that would allow users to find the show on various platforms, but I don't see a ticket for that, so I'm not sure what the status of that improvement is. Even if that feature is still coming, I wonder about the usefulness (or introduced confusion) of this button in the meantime. (I realize there are external blockers on that feature.)
I think the problem with this button is exacerbated by the fact that the HTTP response for any given feed can change the behavior of the button, and we can't do much to easily control that. Based on the specific content type or disposition of the file that the button is linking to, sometimes it will open in the browser and sometimes it will download the file. This behavior can also vary from browser to browser for a given file.
Currently there's also no way to even know what the button is going to do in many situations before clicking it (see #89).
