This is a feature request to add support in ezEML for the creation/support of citation elements in packages (at least within method steps). The topic was briefly discussed during the LTER IMC annual meeting earlier this week, and I was asked by Colin Smith to submit a GitHub issue about it.

Thanks for following up on this @gkamener.

I may have been a little premature in suggesting a feature request be submitted since the IM group is still debating a suitable approach to handle article/product citations of data packages in EDI. The other option being considered is to use the Data Portal Citation Manager, which allows citations to be added without creating a data package revision (required anytime the data package metadata is edited), and thus circumvents the related "chicken-and-egg issue".

Thanks for clarifying @clnsmth and for the note about citing data packages with the Data Portal Citation Manager.

I want to mention there is the citation element used within method steps to cite methods used to collect data in a package. In that case, there is usually no "chicken-and-egg issue" since the publication a dataset needs to cite for methods should usually already exist. I can pull up some examples of packages that use this citation type if that would be helpful. It sounds like more discussion is needed before any decisions are made regarding this request.
