Wiping the description and will leave an updated checklist of stuff to evaluate and/or improve:

Overall look and feel

Landing pages

Event pages

I know you'd like to improve (as would I!), but they're clean, functional, and look pretty damn good as is (unless I'm missing anything); I'd be happy to spend more time customizing the theme and templates that come with the plugins if you can budget for additional work; either way, I think it's a good representation to announce and then we could potentially roll in design/theme improvements.

Performance

Seems to be performing better on https://angelcityjazz.com/ and I'm looking at ways to further optimize; of course several plugins that could resize/scale/format images but not sure any are free; I looked at doing manually but that would be super tedious and time consuming.

Other

Again, I'll keep this description updated based on signoffs, questions, and concerns raised in the comments.

Hey Rocco - I wasn't able to access until I realized you set it to private; probably not necessary since we're working on stage.

Here's what I noticed when reviewing - https://acjstg.wpengine.com/event/kris-davis-trio-steve-lehman-garden-of-klons/

  • Looked one of the quotes was nested and I fixed it.
  • fixed the citation color in CSS
  • changed the font color on one of quotes to white
  • removed some of the paragraphs or line breaks being used to vertically center (I'll go back and do with CSS)
  • I did not go through the bios and break into paragraphs; if you're copy/pasting from another source, I'd just make sure the format is consistent

That said, I think you can use that now as a base for the others.

Keep leaving feedback and questions in the comments as you go and and I'll review each event to make minor fixes/changes after you're done.

Hey Rocco - will try to answer your questions from earlier here so we can track -

the title of the page should be hidden but it's still appearing overimposed the banner. How do you remove it?

The Hide page title setting is enabled but it doesn't always work... easy for me to fix w/ CSS.

is there a setting that keeps the full image visible no matter the size of the page so that the text on the banner remains visible?

It should functioning like that already. Is the image being hidden?

Forgot to mention this is for the festival page

I'm assuming you're trying to make changes to https://acjstg.wpengine.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/ but I'm not seeing what you're pointing out.

Are you drafting on a different page? If yes, I'd just modify https://acjstg.wpengine.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/ and then I can troubleshoot that one.

It's on the live page:
https://angelcityjazz.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/

Please fix asap!

Pretty sure a looked at that page a couple times yesterday when troubleshooting and doing code updates and didn't see the new image. Saw it this morning and realized you swapped out the cover image (rather than adding as an image as we've done before).

Either way, check it now (clear the cache or refresh if you're still seeing the cover)...

...and let's continue to make changes and improvements to https://acjstg.wpengine.com/ (including new art and colors) and I'll migrate stuff to live whenever ready.

I wanted to first see how it would work with the carousel -
https://acjstg.wpengine.com

Also wanted to see if we could display IN the carousel -
https://acjdev.wpengine.com

Personally I think the latter could work well as we could also add events you'd want to feature. Probably would need to remove the title and overlay for that slide. And possibly use a variation of the banner (it pulls in the featured image - which can be different from the image we're using for the banner).

Let me know what you think and I'll try to spend a little time on this over the weekend.

Implemented option 1 on https://angelcityjazz.com/ but my preference would be to have that in the carousel (similar to the following sites we've used for inspiration):
https://www.sfjazz.org/
https://www.pdxjazz.org/

It wouldn't work with the banner (or any image) with text (or art) on the edges could get cropped. It's much better to include the post (or page) so we'd have better control of how to display (for example - if you minimize the screen of https://www.sfjazz.org/, the title is hidden on smaller screens)....

...that all said, I'm realizing I can't see the carousel on SF Jazz anymore (can you?) - maybe they just changed it?

All in all, I'm still on the fence about having the banner + carousal underneath - what do you think about having them both on https://angelcityjazz.com/?

How's it now? https://acjstg.wpengine.com/event/wayne-horvitz-zony-mash-electric-circus/

I want back through some of the older events and copied in a blockquote and revised.

With regards to the text, I'm not sure why the paragraph text is defaulting to black (after I've set the text colors on groups and blocks to white), but you can change in the editor by clicking on a paragraph and changing the color in the sidebar (see the screengrab).

Edit Event “Wayne Horvitz: Zony Mash + Electric Circus” ‹ Angel City Jazz — WordPress 2024-06-12 12-51-14

I get that it's annoying and will try to resolve so paragraphs are white by default.

Any other issues with the formatting of this page?

I did check the colors on stage real quick - they look good! but would like to play around with the colors you provided in #67 (comment) ... then realized I didn't see any info in that comment or email.

If you could post them, I'll try to play around on https://acjdev.wpengine.com/ so we can compare and contrast.

Very cool - thanks for sharing the color codes - what do you think of https://acjdev.wpengine.com/ with the following:

#007f91 (background color) - primary
#bc27f6 (logo fill color) - secondary

Also could add #261375 (background color) and some of the colors for 'circle shapes' as the background certain sections/groups

Seems like those colors (and the variations automatically created) work pretty well on landing and events pages -
https://acjdev.wpengine.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/
https://acjdev.wpengine.com/event/otmaro-ruiz-quartet-aca-competition-winner/

Then again - what you plugged in on stage is good too!

#bc27f6 (logo fill color) - primary
#07f91 (logo fill color) - secondary

https://acjstg.wpengine.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/
https://acjstg.wpengine.com/event/otmaro-ruiz-quartet-aca-competition-winner/

Actually just realizing those are the same primary/secondary but in different order.

Are those what you plugged in or did I overwrite and forget?

Hey Rocco - thanks for reminding me about https://acjstg.wpengine.com/event/wayne-horvitz-zony-mash-electric-circus/

While I 'think' I get why you'd want to add that (to associate those events with this years fest?), I'm not sure adding that logo (or any logo) is the most effective way to go about that... especially on pages where there might also be sponsor logos.

Think it would be cleaner/more effective if we displayed the event series (if we used that feature included in https://theeventscalendar.com/)...

...actually never really looked at that until checking out how it works on https://demo.theeventscalendar.com/

Seems like that could work not only to associated current events, but past festivals. Let me test out on dev or another environment and share here.

Think I've been able to work through most of what you logged above -

  • remove gaps in bio blocks - looks like some of the media blocks weren't in their own group (where there's a css class that removes the margins); took me a bit to figure this out, but I 'think' I identified the problem and fixed
  • add the calendar grid - added to https://acjstg.wpengine.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/ for now; think a banner without words (aside from the logo) would work best; do you have a version like that?
  • replace carousal with calendar grid - i agree the banner + carousal is too big, but i'd still like to see if the banner (without embedded words) could work within the carousal (along with upcoming ACJF events); i'm experimenting on a different environment and will share when there's something to evaluate; in the meantime i added the grid to https://acjstg.wpengine.com/ (still need to fine tune the background/padding/margins).
  • associate each ACJF event with the corresponding festival; there's no easy way to do this but I've been playing around with different approaches on a different environment
  • adding the event time to https://acjstg.wpengine.com/events/; have we displayed in the past (on the events page)?; maybe not since there's no way to do this in the settings (which is a bit strange); that said, i can add by overriding the templates; also working on a different environment and will roll into stage when ready to evaluate

Anything else we need to tweak or improve?

Following up on the other issues you logged in #68 (comment)

I had to adjust the focus point on the bio photos as the focus I placed
on the staging site did not carry through to the live site.

I also went through every image and added titles and alt tags... 'that' might have thrown a few off. Also noticed many of the images are huge - I wanted to migrate first, but I might go back through and resize to improve performance. Not sure if this will affect the focal points, but it's certainly something you'll want to review when you start your day tomorrow.

as for the branding, what about placing it to the left of the photo
vertically (text rotated 90 degrees)?

Hard for me to visualize - are you talking about the image you originally added or something we could do with a category or css? Either way, it will most likely take a bit of time customizing the templates/css to get it right.

I'm not going to re-import or wipe the stage so we can use to mock up some examples there.

Just noticed you added the new spotify embed (I'll be listening today!). I'll add on https://angelcityjazz.com/explorations/ (along with the 2023 playlist).

Also will go back through all the landing pages to make sure the background colors flow and are consistent with the current branding.

I'll also do that on stage and will point you for stuff to review....

...with regards to timing - should I add the line-up blocks and make any other branding adjustments (to home and the festival landing page) before I go to bed (assuming you have a chance to review/sign off)? I can adjust my schedule accordingly depending on 'when' you're planning to announce tomorrow.

Everything seems to work but there is a small white gap in between the banner and the slideshow on the homepage.

That's what I noticed when evaluating during my morning walk. For some reason just re-selecting the image fixes the problem (which I did).

I'm thinking of adding a tickets page to make it easy for people to buy
tickets.Here is a staging version: https://acjstg.wpengine.com/2023-acjf-tickets/

I feel like we discussed (or maybe you added) last year? I like the idea but the formatting is inconsistent and it doesn't link to the event pages. What if we were able to add ticket links/buttons to the grid on https://angelcityjazz.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/ or https://angelcityjazz.com/events/ (<-- would probably be cleaner).

Assuming you're not needing to launch that before you announce, I can look at options later today.

Also I updated the links to evaluate in the description #67 (comment)

Please keep logging any issues you come across and I'll work through once I'm back from round two of pet-sitting duties.

Site is looking/working well on by laptop!

  • when adding the link to the current festival page to my linktree site, it
pulls an old graphic from 2022. I tried to look for that setting but
couldn't find it. Can you update it to the current logo?

I think it's in the metadata settings - I'll look into and will resolve asap.

what does this message mean and should I worry about it? Originally
distributed from Angel City Jazz. This page has been unlinked from the
origin page. Edits to the origin page will not update this remote version.

That's from the distributor plugin (that we use to migrate to other environments). We used to migrate from stage last year, but I probably can disable...

....shorter answer is no, don't worry about it!

Hey Rocco -

I've been trying to improve the related events block (on the bottom of each events page) and decided to see if/how the block we've used in other areas of the site would work..

...that art obvsoiuly desn't work, but check out the event pages on dev -
https://acjdev.wpengine.com/event/foursolosets/

If you think that could work, I'll spend a bit more time improving.

Also swapped out the events calandar shortcode with a similar block on https://acjdev.wpengine.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/. Wanted to see if it would load faster (and if it wold be easier to customize). Based on initial testing/evaluation...if we don't 'need' the nice date overlay (actually might be able to create something similar/better), I think using/extending a block already included (as opposed to the paid, difficult to customize events calendar plugin) could be a better option.

Also added back the carosoul for a quick test on displaying upcoming events https://acjdev.wpengine.com/. As mentioned before, we'd need a slight variation of the featured images (i.e without borders) and a bit of custom theming... but it 'might' be a more effective way to spotlight 'all' upcoming events (rather than just displaying the first three).

Let me know if you think any/all of the above is worth pursuing.

Also be sure to log any issues you've come across or ideas for improvment.

I just did another round of tests on my devices and browsers... not seeing any issues. Also ran a couple more performance tests (still room for improvement but running much better than when we were on Bluehost). Also checked to see if there were any sever outages (there were not).

As mentioned, I've been checking the site a lot all day and into the night - never ran into issues with the live site not loading (or being super slow).

Not sure why you're experience is different in... (assuming you're in europe somewhere?).... considering you've also had issues I couldn't replicate (like the reappearing eventbrite embed), it migth be some strange connection/cache issue on your end.

Just know that everyting is (and has been) working well here (so I feel ok about going to bed now).

I'll be checking email in a few hours once the animals we're pet-sitting start barking and meowing.

Hey Rocco - Just crawled out of bed and proceeded to do another round of browser/performance tests across multiple devices.

Everything still seems to be loading/working well. Not seeing any additional comments from you - should I assume things are working on your end?

I don't want to discount any issues you've been having. The site should be working in all parts of the world - on a variety of devices and connection speeds.

While the tests on mobile devices has been better than past years, there are things we can do to improve performance.

Of course some options may involve a(nother) paid plugin, add-on service provided by our host, and/or additional time from me or another partner.

I'll try to connect with Tony (who is providing the hosting account) to discuss options.

Think it would be better to create a new issue to focus, but please keep general feedback coming in this issue.

I'll be out doing morning housesitting/petsitting duties for the next couple hours but will be monitoring email on my phone.

Hey Rocco -

I was able to change the aspect ratio in the css class for youtube embeds on the following:
https://angelcityjazz.com/event/jennyandiseulat2220/
https://angelcityjazz.com/event/elsa-nilssons-pulses-sasha-berliner/

Also went back through and fixed the formatting for some of the bios (you probably changed recently).

Finally I updated to the latest WordPress release (just released the other day) and in doing so, some other minor css improvements.

We're about to fly to the east coast (where I'll be on family vacation in Maine this weekend/next week). I will have my computer, will be monitoring the site, email, etc.

So please keep logging any issues and improvements and I'll respond/remedy as fast as possible.
