[Angel City Jazz Festival landing page] Evaluate content and display #2
Comments
As mentioned in this comment #1 (comment), I'm not totally sure the logos work - even if they're exactly the same size - think something closer to the previous format (pullquotes and possibly a list) is more effective and visually appealing. |
I didn't really like the list as the titles are too long and need to be cut. WHat if we use thumbnail images from the articles instead of the logos? |
@roccosomazzi As noted in #3, the "2020 VR Festival Artists" block is displaying posts, not artist pages. So this type of block would work well for all the artist interviews done by LeRoy. In addition, I'm assuming we'll want to have some sort of calendar block to display all the ACJ festival events. Since the interviews aren't happening until Sept (right?), we won't have posts for each artist by launch. Were we planning on launching before we had all the event details locked down (i.e. event pages?) or when we had the artists confirmed? If the latter, I'll need to format and display artist pages similar to how we're displaying in the "2020 VR Festival Artists" block. Does that make sense? |
@roccosomazzi Here's a quick mockup of a marginless layout with pullquotes linking to the external articles - the colors, backgrounds, column widths, etc. would need to be tweaked, but this should provide a general idea - If you'd rather have the margins between columns and blocks like https://content-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/angel-city-jazz-fest/, I can reformat that page and adjust some of the css that is currently affecting the margins. We can also use css to adjust the padding and alignment rather than adding the spacers. Just let me know what your preference is regarding margins. |
Ok, try to format the ACJF page with no margins and let's see how it feels.
I made a few changes today. Also added a bunch of archived videos. Will add
a few artists probably tomorrow.

I'll keep working on this instance so I don't step on any of your changes - I need to dig into the past programs layout and make it look better on mobile. Also note I changed the header setting so the social links also show up top - will need to play with css but let me know if this works. More info on those settings are here https://newspack.pub/support/themes/customizing-the-header/ |
I like the press blocks, but I liked the old header better. Also the no
margin layout is good.

@roccosomazzi Looks like we may have been editing the same page at the same time. I duplicated the page and just copied in my changes to the existing landing page https://content-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/angel-city-jazz-fest/ Looks like you might be editing the one that I drafted - https://content-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/angel-city-jazz-festival-newpage/ I have everything backed up on another dev instance, just in case there was something lost on the updated page. Sorry about that! |
Thought of a layout change:
|
Interesting idea https://content-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/! Think we could add a few blocks for featured artists, news, and upcoming festival events/tickets on the front page. I'll create another issue to focus on the front page. |
No problem. Which page should I be editing now for the festival?

The same one - https://content-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/angel-city-jazz-fest/ Note the layout (columns, alignment, margins, padding, etc) is still a work in progress and something that can be improved with css. Probably best for you to log tweaks you'd like to see and I'll make them. Similar thing for blocks and widgets - there may be other elements we'll want to add, but it will take a bit of css or theming to get them right. |
Hey Gus, I played around a bit with the Angel City Jazz Fest landing page
but in so doing the layout is a bit out. Can you take a look and fix some
of the block alignments?
thanks

I'm not sure the layout and placement of the about section totally works. For one thing I think we should have the 2020 VR Festival Line-Up span the entire top column then possibly have the about copy split in a couple columns below. I can create an alternate display on the theming instance while I clean up the theme. |
Ok, let’s try that

Here's an evolving alternate view on https://stage-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/angel-city-jazz-fest/
If you like the general look/layout, I'll copy over to the content site and then you can fine tune. |
I think that works. Where would you put the Donate/Volunteer box? Or would
you just leave it in the homepage?

- I think the entire lineup looks better and more prominent spanning
the top container - we can add links for RSVP and tickets (when they become
available) for each
- Think all information about the festival looks better spanning the
entire page but broken up in columns; also moved the newsletter signup - if
there's a separate mailing list for the 2020 festival (like a RSVP list) we
could add it there. Might also make sense to add the production info that's
currently in the events sidebar -

Just noticed that
https://stage-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/calendar/anthony-fung/ doesn't
have a sidebar. We should definitively keep the sidebar even if we move the
overworld info to the festival page.

I copied it over - couple additional things -
|
Following up on #4 (comment) - For whatever reason, the apostrophe wasn't formatting properly. Also made a slight tweak to "...was conceived in 2008 as a vehicle to present the best music happening in the contemporary West Coast jazz scene" - changed "as vehicle" to "as a vehicle". |
Following up on #5 (comment), are you thinking just adding a button or embedding the trailer? If not embed, maybe a block similar to these others? Probably could just duplicate the Get involved block and edit - |
Here is how I would do it on the festival main page:

I took out some of the extra padding in the column - also made the first paragraph italic (which I guess was previously H2) - feel free to revise - Following up on the updated grid - what don't you like? What if we took out the video release date bit and just listed the date? We could also display over the image similar to the Archival Videos section - The current display would be great if the images didn't take so long to resize and load. |
I guess I really like the semi opaque number image in the corners. Just
having text, whether over the image or below makes it look less polished.

In addition to the home page #4 (comment), I created a new grid/page using the same plugin. There's an increase in performance and more importantly, the slow image/resize issue is much less apparent if noticeable at all. Think we can improve if you're good with swapping this out after making any other adjustments. |
Following up on #4 (comment), what about separating streaming and upcoming events on the festival page? Something like this - https://angelcityjazz.com/staging/6049/angel-city-jazz-fest/ |
Hey Rocco - following up on #20 (comment) I was away during the long weekend. Looks like you were able to make the festival page the home page and added to the policy page and a primary menu item. Do you still want a pop up or possibly a block that would link to that page? SF Jazz again provides a good example of prominent placement. |
Guess we could also link to the page on each event? Maybe a blurb similar to what the Ford has under the buy tickets link? https://www.theford.com/events/performances/1317/2021-10-14/billy-childs-jazz-chamber-ensemble-featuring-special-guest-dianne-reeves Let me know if you need help setting something up. |
@angelcityjazz With the festival commencing, I wanna make sure we're listing the events properly. First off, do want the grid to be static on https://angelcityjazz.com/? Similar to what we did last year. What about https://angelcityjazz.com/events/? Right now that will only display upcoming events. Let me know and I'll make any necessary tweaks. Wishing I was there! |
@angelcityjazz Reopening this so we can evaluate and sign off on https://acjdev.wpengine.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/ Main thing right now is to make sure we're happy with the general layout and formatting (spacing, colors, etc.). Do you see any glaring problems or quick changes you'd like to see? Leave a comment and I'll review and work in before pushing to live tonight. |
