It seems like xfce4’s default layout switching shortcut might conflict with Level5+Space. To be confirmed.

If this sets the option grp:alt_space_toggle in XKB, then yes, it actually changes the key type and thus drops the levels on supported by it.
grp:alt_space_toggle
XKB is very flexible, but cannot merge key types.
