Summary

Jukeboxes should be able to broadcast/playback recieved radio signals to nearby players, much like radios in real life.

Motivation

This will allow players to listen to radio transmissions by simply being near a jukebox, instead of having to waste valuable inventory space by carrying a compass in the hotbar.
This is meant for players who wish to use the Radio plugin, but simply do not have the time, initiative, or interest in carrying around a compass and searching for signals.
By implementing this, players will be more likely to use the Radio plugin as it will be much simpler to listen to radio signals, while in their base or in a city.

Detailed design

Jukeboxes will be able to play back received radio broadcasts.
Jukeboxes can be placed into scan mode or recieve mode:

  • Scan mode - jukeboxes attempt to pick up signals at random, like compasses do now
  • Recieve mode - jukeboxes are tuned to a specific frequency with a sign placed on a face of the block, then pick up the signal and consistently play it back.

The range of the playback can be either preset or determined with an in-game mechanic (e.g. signal of redstone current powering the block).

Drawbacks

  • No drawbacks have been proposed so far.

Alternatives

  • No alternative designs have been considered.
  • Not implementing this RFC will result in the Radio plugin being neglected, as it currently is.

Unresolved questions

  • Range of jukebox playback.
