Middleware for API's in general

I haven't done much yet by way of pulling data through API's, I did notice you have a topic on costing resources, but wondered if there are any general middleware packages that facilitate interaction with API's, authentication, getting dictionaries and data into local datastructures, etc. It's a topic I currently know nothing of.
