Very slow performance importing SVGs

Here is a really pretty flower vector I wanted to implement into my own project:

First I had to do some editing, so I opened it on the graphite website... And it took ages to open! My understanding is that SVGs should be easy to import, but I'm barely able to pan around because it's so sluggish! Looking at the node graph I see an odd layer layout that makes me think something isn't right - but I'm unable to try to fiddle with it because "Your browser has stopped responding... wait/kill?"

In inkscape, opening and working in the file doesn't seem to show any trouble.

This is one of the remaining areas where performance still struggles most greatly, and you're right that some of the layers don't get placed correctly in relation to each other within the graph (it is also mostly that layout algorithm that is responsible for the slow performance, I believe). Thanks for filing the issue so we can keep track of this known flaw and open it up to contributors.

That file has over 500 paths as well as three different embedded bitmap images. For optimal performance, it is recommend to use <100 layers and avoid bitmap images.

Also, the node graph UI performance has improved since the last stable release. You may have a better time opening and manipulating the graph view from the development build: https://dev.graphite.rs
