  • Create targets to construct the installer symlinks
  • Create dd_agent_pkg_mklink to allow variable substitution into links.
  • Add a capability to import build environment variables into our rules, specifically the dd_agent_pkg_mklink

The need for variable substitution into the links is because the installer links to versions of the agent with a pipeline id in the name of the link. The pipeline id comes from the build environment.

To avoid polluting the build configuration with a dynamic variable like the pipeline id, we can import environment variables into a .bzl file that we can load in the few places (near the top of the build graph) where it is needed.

Extra testing

Mock up the next PR in datadog-agent-installer-symlinks.rb

command_on_repo_root "bazelisk run -- //packages/agent/linux:install --destdir='/opt/datadog-packages/pr45475'"
command_on_repo_root "find /opt/datadog-packages/pr45475", :live_stream => Omnibus.logger.live_stream(:info)
command_on_repo_root "ls -lR /opt/datadog-packages", :live_stream => Omnibus.logger.live_stream(:info)

Then check the job output:https://gitlab.ddbuild.io/DataDog/datadog-agent/-/jobs/1375529191/raw

The structure of /opt/datadog-packages/pr45475 matches the other, so that is a pass.

$ find /opt/datadog-packages
/opt/datadog-packages/run
/opt/datadog-packages/run/datadog-agent
/opt/datadog-packages/run/datadog-agent/7.77.0-devel.git.35.cffba48.pipeline.92721576
/opt/datadog-packages/datadog-agent
/opt/datadog-packages/datadog-agent/experiment
/opt/datadog-packages/datadog-agent/stable

/opt/datadog-packages/pr45475/opt/datadog-packages/run

/opt/datadog-packages/pr45475/opt/datadog-packages/datadog-agent/experiment

Explanation

Confidence level: 90.00%
Effect size tolerance: |Δ mean %| ≥ 5.00%

Performance changes are noted in the perf column of each table:

  • ✅ = significantly better comparison variant performance
  • ❌ = significantly worse comparison variant performance
  • ➖ = no significant change in performance

A regression test is an A/B test of target performance in a repeatable rig, where "performance" is measured as "comparison variant minus baseline variant" for an optimization goal (e.g., ingress throughput). Due to intrinsic variability in measuring that goal, we can only estimate its mean value for each experiment; we report uncertainty in that value as a 90.00% confidence interval denoted "Δ mean % CI".

For each experiment, we decide whether a change in performance is a "regression" -- a change worth investigating further -- if all of the following criteria are true:

  1. Its estimated |Δ mean %| ≥ 5.00%, indicating the change is big enough to merit a closer look.

  2. Its 90.00% confidence interval "Δ mean % CI" does not contain zero, indicating that if our statistical model is accurate, there is at least a 90.00% chance there is a difference in performance between baseline and comparison variants.

  3. Its configuration does not mark it "erratic".
