Unfortunately, I can't do this, because Steam suppresses the notification:

osascript -e 'display notification "Your instance bid has been exceeded. Save your game NOW!" with title "ec2gaming" sound name "Basso"'

Need to find a good way of providing an alert that you're about to lose your instance.
