Make sure to edit the active the table. Do all edits in tables before joining the tables together.
Restart! If there is an issue, restarting QGIS is usual the best course of action
Be careful with multiple choice and choice box options when updating and creating projects

JOINS

You can customize the field name during the join process-- so that it does not take the whole path name. Uncheck box and re-write path name (or remove it all together)
Something funky goes on with joins sometimes in that the match up doesnt work proerly and you get a bunch of null values. I have found that making sure you click "Apply" on the relationship join and then removing the memory cache works.

STYLING

Use color-safe colors. Make sure borders are visible
Color palette. Subtle is always better.

Make sure you are using web friendly projection. EPSG:3857
