Default "user" query info

Know where can I find information on the inner workings of the "user" query that is always available (as opposed to "User", where handle must be specified)?
Such as what makes it available to the user by default etc.

Is there a name for it this type of query?

It gets called based on the auth token that’s being attached to every request.
