Hi @kpj2006 ,As a new contributor, I’ve noticed that sometimes contributors may need to wait a long time for a response after requesting issue assignment (for example, by commenting “please assign this issue to me”).

One possible improvement could be to introduce a clearer or more automated assignment workflow, such as:
Defining a guideline that allows contributors to start working if there is no response within a fixed time frame (e.g., 24–48 hours), or
Using labels or lightweight automation to track and manage assignment requests more efficiently.
This could help reduce waiting time, improve the contributor experience—especially for new contributors—and make collaboration smoother across repositories.

@charuljain02 's idea is generally good, @kpj2006.

If the issue was created by a knight/maintainer/admin, then we could assign to the first person who requests assignment. And reassign of the assignee doesn't submit a PR within a few days.

If the issue was created by an external contributor, the issue should first be tagged as approved by a knight/maintainer/admin...

Also, this feature should be optional. Some maintainers might prefer to keep manual control of assignment.

Another thing to keep in mind is that we should prevent people from requesting too many issue assignments simultaneously.

I’d love to contribute to this organization template enhancement and build on @charuljain02’s idea.

Proposal:

Add an optional, org‑wide “auto‑assignment helper” to the template (via GitHub Action or bot config) that:

Automatically suggests or assigns the first requester on issues opened by knights/maintainers/admins.

Supports a simple timeout + reassignment rule (e.g., unassign if no PR or update within a few days).

Respects issues opened by external contributors by requiring an explicit “approved” label from a knight/maintainer/admin before auto‑assignment can happen.

Optionally guards against over‑assignment by preventing a user from holding more than N open assigned issues without active PRs.

What I can work on:

Draft a small, configurable workflow (or config file) that can live in this template repo and be reused across AOSSIE projects.

Document how maintainers can opt in / opt out per repository, so teams that prefer manual assignment can keep their current flow.

If this direction fits the goals for this template, I’d be happy to refine the design and open a PR.
